Acesta a fost construit alături de hotelul Splendid, unul din cele mai importante hoteluri ale Bucureștiului interbelic, proiectat tot de Arghir CULINA.<br />
Fotograful Willy Pragher surprinde hotelul modernist de pe terasa Hotelului Athénée Palace și din fața Atheneului Român, după bombardamentele din timpul celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial. Fotografiile se găsesc în <a href="https://www2.landesarchiv-bw.de/ofs21/olf/struktur.php?bestand=20946&klassi=023.00025.%&anzeigeKlassi=025" target="_blank">Landesarchiv Baden Württemberg</a>.<br />
Se distingea încă foarte bine volumul îngust, zvelt orientat spre Hotelul Athénée Palace, temperat de orizontalele moderniste ale parapeților și registrele umbrite ale ferestrelor dintre aceștia. Ultimul nivel forma un registru separat, retrăgând ușor planul fațadei, și, mai ales, utilizând goluri cu arc în plincintru, modelate în rigoarea modernismului. În dreapta Hotelului se pot distinge primele două travei ale clădirii Mica, semnate de Duiliu Marcu, căzută la cutremurul din 1977. <span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Aceasta este una din cele trei lucrări realizate de Arghir CULINA pentru Societatea de Asigurare Dacia România, comenzi înlesnite probabil de membri aromâni ai consiliului director şi duse la bun sfârşit într-o manieră impecabilă. Acest bloc de locuinţe se încadrează într-un Art Deco epurat, vecin cu modernismul pe care îl putem citi în liniile clare şi volumele bine definite ale compoziţiei. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US">Canelurile</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> orizontale şi parapeţii curbi ai balcoanelor apropie limbajul arhitectural de un Art Deco Streamline, generând o incintă cvasi-publică intimă. Proiectul iniţial prevedea o aripă simetrică care ar fi închis această incintă în formă de </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US">'U'. </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Probabil din fonduri insuficiente pentru acest proiect, Societatea a construit până la urmă doar această aripă. Constrângeri de buget se pot observa şi la calitatea materialelor de faţadă, a cărei vârstă a lăsat urme majore de deteriorare. Eleganţa elementelor verticale încoronate cu antene radio stilizate, specifice Art Deco, este, din păcate contrazisă de acoperişul recent improvizat care se poate observa şi în imagine. Iniţial faţadele erau închise la partea superioară de un </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US">registru</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US">riflat-friză</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> pe care îl străpungeau doar elementele verticale.</span></span></span></div>

This apartment building fits within a cleansed Art Deco st</i></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US"><i>yle, neighboring modernism, which can be read through the clear lines and the well defined volumes of the composition. The horizontal grooves and curved balcony parapet walls bring the architecture closer to a Streamline Art Deco, generating a quasi-public intimate enclosure. The initial design had another wing, symmetrical to the one built that closed this </i></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="ro-RO"><i>space</i></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US"><i> in </i></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="ro-RO"><i>a</i></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US"><i> U-shape </i></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="ro-RO"><i>plan</i></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US"><i>. Probably due to insufficient funds for this project, the Company eventually only built this one wing. Budget restraints can be also observed in the quality of the facade materials, which aged badly. The elegance of the vertical elements crowned by stylized radio antennas, typical Art Deco elements, is unfortunately contradicted by the recently improvised roof that can be seen in the image. Initially, the facades were closed by a fluted frieze that was only penetrated by the vertical elements.</i></span></span></span></span></div>

De asmenea, un alt element morfologic pe care îl reia la sfârşitul anilor </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US">'20, este balconul continuu re</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">zultat din retragerea ultimului nivel. În perspectiva operei lui CULINA, având în vedere elementele comune cu lucrări Art-Deco de acelaşi autor suntem tentaţi să subliniem acest stil în </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US">vocabularul </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">arhitectural mai sus menţionat.</span></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>The Medical Students' Dormitory is a work of stylistic transition for architect Arghir CULINA, in which one can observe Neoromanian window framing, motifs, columns and arches, Eclectic decoration, Art Deco railings that he would later successfully use for the Union Hotel and other buildings. Another morphological element that he also reuses at the end of the '20s is the continuous balcony for top story setback. Through the perspective of CULINA's work, taking into consideration the elements shared with Art Deco designs by the same author, we are tempted to invoke this style within the above mentioned architectural vocabulary.</i></span></span></div>

Canelurile orizontale ale parapeţilor de la etajele 1 şi 5 împreună cu feroneria balcoanelor şi coloanele stilizate de la nivelurile superioare constituie o imagine coerentă stilistic susţinută de detalii compuse din registre de denticuli care subliniază cornişe profilate. Parterul a suferit şi aici o serie de modificări recente improvizate, ca la multe alte clădiri ale autorului.</span></span></div>

Sculptura romantică care înfăţişează soldatul susţinut de un suflu patriotic alegoric este aşezată pe un piedestal Neoromânesc, discret, elansat şi elegant decorat cu motive împletite româneşti, cartuşe şi ghirlande sculptate. Deşi acesta nu este amplasamentul iniţial al sculpturii, aceasta completează într-un mod plăcut piaţa, chiar dacă momentan aceasta este folosită din păcate ca parcare.</span></span></div>

One such scenario is the pedestal for a statue, or, in this case, for an allegorical ensemble. Moved to it's current placement in 1930, the allegorical ensemble is the work of sculptor Emil Wilhelm BECKER (1881-1951), the author, among others, of the facade sculptures that decorate the Cantacuzino Palace and the University. The romantic sculpture depicting the soldier upheld by a patriotic momentum rests upon a discrete and slender Neoromanian pedestal , elegantly decorated with romanian knot motifs, shields and carved garlands. Although this is not the initial placement of the sculpture, it pleasantly completes the circus, even though it is currently being used as a parking lot.</i></span></span></div>

Deşi cele două aripi de clădire sunt de lungimi diferite, arhitectul flanchează curbura faţadei cu două elemente-bovindou verticale, ample, aproximativ simetrice, tratând astfel cele două străzi cu aproape aceeaşi importanţă. Bovindourile au ferestrele amplasate excentric, pe colţuri, element de vocabular comun stilurilor Art Deco şi Modernist.</span></span></div>

Even though the two building wings differ in length, the architect flanks the curve of the facade with two large, vertical and almost symmetrical bow-windows thusly addressing both streets with the same importance. The bow-windows have eccentrically placed corner windows, a vocabulary element common to Art Deco and Modernist styles.</i></span></span></div>

Faţadele sunt împărţite în trei registre: parter şi mezanin, cu deschideri ample şi bosaj pronunţat; registrul median şi mansarda. Registrul median este mai auster, prezentând elemente decorative strict sub forma ancadramentelor simple, a consolelor, a feroneriei de parapeţi şi a amplei cornişe. Registrul mansardei a avut de suferit în urma recentei renovări – iniţial mansarda era mult mai compactă, gazduind doar rândul de lucarne cu ancadrament şi arc în plin-cintru. Altfel, lucrările de consolidare şi restaurare a faţadelor au avut un efect revitalizant mult aşteptat pentru clădirea situată central, până nu demult părăsită.</span></span></div>

The middle register is more austere employing decoration strictly as simple carved window frames, balcony supports, railing ironwork and an ample cornice. The mansard register had to suffer during the recent renovation - initially the roof was much more compact, housing only one level of round arched framed dormers. Otherwise, the facade restoring and consolidation processes have had a long-awaited revitalizing effect for the downtown building until recently abandoned.</i></span></span></div>

Faţada este realizată din trei registre principale, cel median şi cel superior fiind împărţite în câte două registre secundare fiecare. Concepută la inceputul perioadei de tranziţie stilistică a arhitectului de la Neoromânesc la Art Deco, faţada acestui imobil combină elemente din ambele stiluri într-o compoziţie asemănătoare cu cea a faţadei hotelului Splendid, lucrare a lui CULINA situată vis-a-vis de Ateneu, dispărută după bombardamentul din 4 Aprilie 1944.</span></span></span></div>

Gândit iniţial ca imobil de locuinţe într-o linie mai apropiată de estetica Streamline a stilului Art Deco, clădirea este materializată cu funcţiunea de hotel şi într-un limbaj monumental al aceluiaşi stil, folosind coloane poligonale în plan, stilizate, care se dezvoltă pe înălţimea a cinci niveluri. <span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Vila de factură neoromânească, operă comună a arhitecţilor Eracle LĂZĂRESCU şi Arghir CULINA, are o compoziţie de faţadă asimetrică, deşi corpul cel mai avansat al imobilului are o axialitate verticală. In urma modificărilor recente suferite de volumetria acoperişului, vila este schimbată radical, cu terasa de la etaj închisă şi copertina Neoromânească dispărută. Din acest motiv, fotografia prezentată este extrasă din revista Arhitectura din 1925.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Volumetria elansată a traveei centrale este în continuare susţinută de proporţiile zvelte ale ferestrelor de la parter şi etaj şi de coşul subliniat de multiple brâie.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Probabil una din primele lucrări ale lui CULINA, o găsim importantă, deoarece, alături de Clădirea Tribunalului din Piteşti şi a unor imobile din ansamblul Pasagiului Imobiliara, este o dovadă a colaborării sale timpurii cu Eracle LĂZĂRESCU.</span><br />
<i style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Neoromanian villa, a work common to architects Eracle LĂZĂRESCU and Arghir CULINA, it has an asymmetrical facade composition, even though the most advanced part of the building has a vertical axiality. Following recent modifications suffered by the roof volume, the house is radically altered, with the first floor terrace enclosed and the Neoromanian Canopy removed. This is why we chose to present a photograph extracted from Arhitectura magazine of 1925.</span></i></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Ancorat în prezent, beneficiarul acceptă sau, poate chiar solicită, o locuinţă Art Deco. Volumul masiv este brăzdat de un brâu profilat decorativ care porneşte de sub copertina de intrare, ocoleşte o fereastră de colţ şi este continuat de una din pergolele de beton armat. Colţuri rotunjite şi canelate, registre riflate, copetine, pergole aerisite din beton armat şi un motiv de zigurat completează aerul Art Deco al elegantei locuinţe.</span></span></div>
